Retrieving Ability Test for Gundogs (RATG)

RATG

Gundogs have a strong instinct for hunting and retrieving, but developing that instinct does require some effort from the handler. There are some retrieving training days that are popular, but require a trip to the country, a full day away and a lot of effort from the organisers.

The Retrieving Ability Tests for Gundogs will allow you to develop the basics of retrieving. RATG training is done over the summer break and there is a training group who meet regularly during the week.

Already in Retrieving Trials but want to improve your performance in the control area? Retrieving Ability Tests for Gundogs will allow you to practice in easy conditions. On completing the tests formally you will get another certificate to hang on the wall.

Not really interested in Retrieving? The Retrieving Ability Tests for Gundogs will allow your dog to experience the hunting environment, with not a hint of a freezing smelly swamp for miles! Research has shown that gundogs that have hunting experience are generally better behaved than gundogs that have never worked in the field.

The objectives of the Retrieving Ability Tests for Gundogs are

  • To introduce Retrieving to gundog owners.

  • To allow Retrieving basics to be taught under easy conditions.

  • To allow handlers to improve control area performance.

  • To allow gundogs to experience their natural instincts.

The rules are uniform nationally, titles are available NRA (Novice Retrieving Ability) and ORA (Open Retrieving Ability).

There are two levels of Retrieving Ability Tests for Gundogs– Novice and Open.

Rules are on the Dogs Australia website.

Retrieving and Field Trials

Retrieving and Field trials are competitions for registered (purebred) Gundogs where dogs are tested for obedience, and natural retrieving and hunting abilities. The trials are set in areas that can as close as possible imitate natural hunting situations.

The Gundog Club of SA unfortunately does not provide training. For more on Retrieving and Field Trials in SA you will find information on the Retrieving & Field Trials Club
of South Australia Inc (RAFTCOSA) website.
